There has been scientific progress in all areas of convergence - nominal, real, structural and regional. In the accession countries, there is a special need of the research. Foreign literature contains a broad collection of concepts explaining the convergence phenomena. The Solow model with decreasing income is considered to be a concept inspiring this research trend. The following phenomena also favour convergence: diffusion of technology and greater benefits from the progress. The catch up process is accompanied by disadvantages of scale and agglomeration in the centre. This is an impulse to spread activities and not to further concentrate. An important contribution to the literature was made by the authors investigating the convergence processes mainly from the point of view of integration processes. The contribution of the following authors is to be mentioned: Sala-i-Martin, Krugman, Giersch. An important contribution to the literature was also made by the Polish regionalists. A special role was played by the work of the Committee of Country's Spatial Management of the Polish Academy of Science. The output of the Polish and foreign literature in the area of the regional growth theory from the angle of the explanation of polarisation and convergence phenomena was presented in the above mentioned paper of Gawlikowska-Hueckel and the papers of K. Malaga and P. Kliber.}, publisher={Wydawnictwo Akademii Ekonomicznej im.
